New Audi RS 5 debuts as a plug-in hybrid
Audi has officially entered a new era of electrified performance with the launch of the new Audi RS 5. For the first time in the history of the RS division, a model adopts a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, combining a twin-turbo V6 engine with electric technology to create one of the most powerful Audis ever built.
The new RS 5 also arrives with an important mission: replacing the former RS 4 Avant and becoming the new performance flagship of the A5 range.
The twin-turbo V6 lives on now with electric power
Unlike several rival brands that downsized their engines, Audi decided to keep the iconic 2.9-liter TFSI twin-turbo V6, now paired with a high-performance electric motor.
According to the brand, this plug-in hybrid setup was developed to deliver “great emotions”, combining impressive acceleration with a new electrified approach.
The numbers are impressive:
639 hp of combined power
825 Nm of torque
0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds
top speed of up to 285 km/h
The quattro system with Dynamic Torque Control also promises greater cornering agility and sharper rear-end handling.
Up to 83 km in fully electric mode
As a plug-in hybrid, the new Audi RS 5 Avant can also drive in fully electric mode.
According to provisional WLTP figures released by Audi, the model can achieve up to 83 km of electric range, offering flexible charging options and greater efficiency for daily driving.
Even with its strong electrification focus, Audi says the main priority remains the traditional RS performance experience.
More muscular and aggressive design
Visually, the new RS 5 has a far more aggressive appearance compared to the standard A5.
The body has been widened by around nine centimeters with, wider wheel arches, honeycomb front grille, larger air intakes, iconic oval RS exhaust tips.
The model keeps the classic RS sporty identity while introducing more modern and aerodynamic styling details.
One of the most interesting details is the rear lighting system. Under braking, the rear window displays a lighting effect inspired by a checkered flag, reinforcing the car’s sporty character and creating a unique visual signature.
New quattro system promises more agility
To handle all that power, Audi introduced an updated version of its quattro all-wheel-drive system with Dynamic Torque Control.
The system can distribute torque ultra-fast between the rear wheels, improving cornering agility and stability during more aggressive driving.
According to Audi, the new RS 5 also includes a dedicated “drift mode” designed for track use.
Weight is the most controversial point
The addition of the hybrid system also brought a significant increase in weight.
In Avant form, the new RS 5 weighs around 2,370 kg, making it roughly 600 kg heavier than its predecessor. This has become one of the most debated aspects among Audi enthusiasts.
Still, Audi argues that the new technology significantly improves both performance and everyday usability.
Portugal debut and pricing
The new Audi RS 5 was also showcased at ECAR Show 2026 in Lisbon, where it was one of the event’s biggest highlights.
