Volkswagen enters electric GTI era with the ID. Polo GTI

Volkswagen enters electric GTI era with the ID. Polo GTI

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the new Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI, the model that will go down in history as the first fully electric car to wear the legendary GTI badge.

The debut took place during the 24 Hours of Nürburgring and marks a symbolic moment for the German brand, precisely in the year Volkswagen celebrates 50 years of the GTI. Half a century after the first Golf GTI, Volkswagen is now entering a new era this time fully electric.

For several years, the brand avoided using the GTI name on its EVs, reserving the GTX badge for the sporty models in the ID. lineup. Now, the strategy changes completely. According to Volkswagen, the new ID. Polo GTI was developed to preserve the classic GTI “hot hatch” spirit, combining compact dimensions, front-wheel drive and a fun driving experience.

The model uses an electric motor mounted on the front axle with:

  • 226 hp (166 kW)

  • 290 Nm of torque

  • 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds

  • top speed of 175 km/h

Just like the original 1976 Golf GTI, all the power continues to be sent to the front wheels.

An electric GTI designed to stay fun

Volkswagen says the new EV was developed to deliver sensations closer to traditional GTI models rather than modern electric cars focused purely on acceleration.

The ID. Polo GTI features adaptive sport suspension, recalibrated steering, an electronic front differential and a dedicated GTI driving mode. There is also a specific GTI button on the steering wheel that instantly changes throttle response, suspension settings, steering feel and the digital dashboard graphics.

Despite its sporty nature, the new electric GTI was also designed for everyday use. The model uses a 52 kWh battery, allowing up to 424 km of WLTP range.

Fast charging supports up to 105 kW, enabling a charge from 10% to 80% in around 24 minutes.

Design inspired by classic GTIs

Visually, the new ID. Polo GTI brings back several iconic GTI design elements, reinterpreted for the electric era.

Highlights include, red accent line at the front, honeycomb-pattern front grille, 19-inch wheels, sporty rear spoiler and seats inspired by classic GTI models.

Inside, Volkswagen combines modern technology with retro-inspired details, including digital graphics inspired by the earliest GTI models.

Despite being a sporty model, the ID. Polo GTI remains relatively practical, offering five seats and compact dimensions ideal for urban driving.

When will it arrive?

According to Volkswagen, the new ID. Polo GTI is expected to arrive on the European market during the second half of 2026 in Germany, with prices starting at just under €39,000.

With this model, Volkswagen aims to prove that compact performance cars still have a place in the electric future and that the GTI badge will continue to live on even without gasoline.
