The V8 lives on: new Mercedes-AMG GLE and GLS 63 models
At a time when many manufacturers are downsizing engines or moving away from large-capacity combustion powertrains altogether, Mercedes-AMG has decided to take a different approach.
The German brand has unveiled the refreshed Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4MATIC+, keeping the iconic twin-turbo V8 at the heart of both models while introducing several technological and performance upgrades.
The updates are designed to strengthen the position of these high-performance SUVs in the premium segment without sacrificing the identity that has made AMG models so popular over the years.
An updated V8 with 612 hp
Under the bonnet remains the familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, now in its latest evolution known as the M177 Evo.
Output remains an impressive 612 hp, accompanied by 850 Nm of torque, delivering performance figures worthy of many supercars. The engine is complemented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, improving responsiveness, efficiency and overall smoothness.
One of the biggest highlights is the new AMG Performance Exhaust System. Thanks to active exhaust valves, drivers can choose between a quieter sound for everyday driving or a louder and more aggressive soundtrack in the sportier driving modes.
According to Mercedes-AMG, the system allows the vehicle’s character to be adapted to different situations, transforming it from a comfortable luxury SUV into a true AMG machine at the touch of a button.
The new exhaust has also been engineered to meet increasingly strict emissions regulations while maintaining the signature V8 sound that many customers associate with AMG.
More technology and a refreshed look
Beyond the mechanical upgrades, both SUVs receive several styling and technology improvements.
The exterior features revised front grilles, updated air intakes, new wheel designs and various AMG-specific visual elements.
Inside, Mercedes has enhanced the digital experience with updates to the MBUX infotainment system, new AMG-specific graphics and expanded customization options.
Both models also feature AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension, active body control and a limited-slip rear differential, helping to improve handling despite the considerable size of these SUVs.
Despite the updates, Mercedes-AMG has worked to preserve the sporty yet luxurious character that defines the GLE 63 S and GLS 63.
The V8 is still alive
The launch of these models comes at a time when many manufacturers are abandoning large-displacement engines in favour of fully electric or plug-in hybrid solutions.
By retaining the twin-turbo V8, Mercedes-AMG is sending a clear message to enthusiasts: there is still room for high-capacity engines and their unmistakable sound.
While the future of the automotive industry will inevitably involve electrification, the German brand is clearly not ready to say goodbye to one of its most iconic engines.
Arrival on the market
The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4MATIC+ are expected to reach major international markets in the coming months.
For now, Mercedes-Benz has not announced pricing for all markets, but both models will continue to represent the pinnacle of AMG’s luxury and high-performance SUV lineup.
One thing is certain: for those who still believe there is no replacement for a big V8, Mercedes-AMG has just provided another compelling argument.
