ALERT - Attempted fraud on behalf of Benecar

ALERT - Attempted fraud on behalf of Benecar

Benecar - Cidade do Automóvel informs its customers, partners and the general public about the existence of scam attempts carried out by individuals who fraudulently present themselves as representatives of our company. In addition to other names that may be used in the future, the messages are sent under the names Pedro Belo and Fernando G. These practices have been identified mainly in Spain, using WhatsApp as a communication channel.

How fraudsters work

With the information we've already gathered through complaints, we've been able to ascertain how fraudsters approach people. This is the way we have been able to present after analysing the various reports we have received:

  1. The customer asks for information in a Facebook Marketplace advert. The photos used belong mainly to ‘we buy your car’ platforms, so they must be misused. We also understand that the Facebook profiles used in the Marketplace may have been hacked;

  2. After requesting information on the Facebook Marketplace, the fraudsters use WhatsApp to get in touch, starting the conversation by posing as Benecar representatives;

  3. It is on WhatsApp that additional information is sent to the victim, directing them to buy the car, offering our company's conditions and including the costs of shipping and registering the vehicle;

  4. Although the scammer invites the victim to visit Benecar (with 48 hours' notice), his strategy is to encourage the victim to opt for home delivery;

  5. If the victim goes beyond this step and opts for home delivery, the scammer sends forged invoices and guarantee certificates, posing as Benecar. As well as forging documents, there are also forged signatures on the contracts presented (see an example of what is shown in the gallery below).

Therefore, for everyone's protection, it is important to clarify that:

  1. Benecar uses WhatsApp exclusively to respond to customer requests made on our official platforms (see point 4). We do not use this channel for mass communication campaigns or payment requests;

  2. Benecar does not use the Facebook Marketplace to advertise cars. Our official platforms (see point 4) contain our vehicles, all with uniform photographs in keeping with Benecar quality;

  3. These scammers offer high-end vehicles at prices well below market value, misusing Benecar's name.

  4. Benecar vehicles are only advertised on the following official portals and platforms:

  • Benecar.pt

  • Standvirtual

  • Pisca Pisca

  • Carmine

  • Autosapo

  • OLX

  • Worten

  • BPI (Prestige Products)

We do not sell vehicles through other websites or platforms.

We recommend caution to all customers and partners:

  • Before carrying out any transaction, always confirm the authenticity of the advert and check that it is present on the official portals mentioned above.

  • Never share personal or bank details without first validating the legitimacy of the contact.

  • In the event of suspicion, immediately report the situation to the authorities and contact Benecar via our official channels.

Benecar is working closely with the Portuguese and Spanish authorities to identify those responsible for these illegal practices and prevent future occurrences.

We thank you for the trust you have placed in our brand and deeply regret any inconvenience caused by this situation. We reiterate our commitment to transparency and security in all our operations.
