Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the new GT SUV, a 100% electric car that promises to revolutionise the sports SUV segment. With up to 1,169 hp, an announced range of 700 kilometres and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds, this model combines supercar performance with the versatility of a family car.
It is also a milestone in the history of Mercedes-Benz’s performance division. For the first time, AMG has developed an SUV entirely from scratch, using a platform designed specifically for high-performance electric cars.
But the figures go far beyond power. The new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV promises ultra-fast charging, technology inspired by Formula 1 and even a sound experience designed to recreate the sensations of traditional V8 engines.
Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will have three versions and up to 1,169 hp
The new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV uses the AMG.EA platform and will be available in three versions: GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63. All feature AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, but offer different levels of power and performance.
The entry-level GT 53 uses two electric motors, one on each axle, producing 544 hp and 800 Nm of torque. These figures allow it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds.
The GT 55 increases power to 816 hp and delivers 1,860 Nm of torque, reaching 100 km/h in just 3.1 seconds.
At the top of the range is the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SUV, equipped with three electric motors producing an impressive 1,169 hp and 2,000 Nm of torque.
With this configuration, the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds and reach 200 km/h in just 7.2 seconds. Top speed can reach 270 km/h when equipped with the optional Driver's Package.
Mercedes-AMG also quotes a 0 to 100 km/h time of 2.5 seconds using a measurement method that excludes the first 30.48 centimetres of the launch.
In the GT 55 and GT 63 versions, the brand uses axial-flux electric motors, a technology that makes it possible to achieve high power from compact units. Two motors are installed on the rear axle and one on the front, allowing more precise distribution of power between the wheels.
Up to 700 km of range and charging in 12 minutes
Despite the announced performance, Mercedes-AMG has also sought to develop a car capable of meeting everyday driving needs.
The GT SUV uses an 800-volt electrical architecture and offers two battery capacities, depending on the version.
The GT 53 features a 106 kWh battery, while the GT 55 and GT 63 use a 128 kWh unit.
According to the figures announced by the brand, range could reach 668 kilometres in the GT 53 and 700 kilometres in the GT 55 and GT 63, according to the WLTP cycle.
Charging is another major highlight. The 106 kWh battery supports direct-current charging powers of up to 600 kW, while the larger unit could reach 710 kW, a figure still subject to homologation.
Under ideal conditions and using a compatible charger, the 128 kWh battery could charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 12 minutes.
Mercedes-AMG also states that it will be possible to recover up to 450 kilometres of range in just ten minutes of charging.
However, these figures depend on factors such as battery temperature, state of charge and the power available from the charging infrastructure being used.
Formula 1-inspired technology and V8 engine sound
To ensure that the new GT SUV can maintain high performance over extended periods, Mercedes-AMG has developed a thermal management system inspired by technology used in Formula 1.
The battery uses cylindrical cells directly cooled by a special liquid, allowing temperature to be controlled during highly demanding situations, such as repeated acceleration or track driving.
The brand has also sought to preserve some of the sensations that characterise its combustion-engine sports models.
Through the AMGFORCE Sport+ system, the GT 55 and GT 63 versions can artificially reproduce the sound of a V8 engine, while the GT 53 features a sound signature inspired by six-cylinder engines.
The system also simulates gear changes, allows virtual shifting through the steering-wheel paddles and uses vibrations in the seats to make the driving experience more immersive.
Although it is a fully electric car, the aim is to retain part of the emotional identity associated with Mercedes-AMG models.
A family SUV with generous dimensions and advanced technology
The new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV measures 5.08 metres in length and has a wheelbase of 3.04 metres.
Despite its sporting proportions, it offers a 607-litre luggage compartment, which can increase to 1,740 litres with the rear seats folded down. There is also a 78-litre front storage compartment.
On the outside, the body features a muscular silhouette, with a sloping roofline, wide tracks and active aerodynamic elements that contribute to stability and efficiency.
To control the behaviour of a car with these dimensions and performance levels, Mercedes-AMG developed the AMG Active Ride Control+ suspension, standard on the GT 63 and optional on the GT 55.
This system combines air suspension with active hydraulic elements, seeking to reduce body roll in corners and movement under braking and acceleration.
Active rear-axle steering also helps improve agility, allowing the rear wheels to turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels at lower speeds, making manoeuvring easier.
Inside, the highlights include a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel and a 14-inch central display angled towards the driver. A third 14-inch display is also available for the front passenger.
The MBUX multimedia system, based on the MB.OS operating system, integrates artificial intelligence features and applications designed for sports driving, such as AMG TRACK PACE, which allows performance data to be analysed on track.
When will the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV arrive in Portugal?
Production of the new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will take place at the Sindelfingen factory in Germany.
The GT 53 version will be the first to reach the market, with orders scheduled to open on October 20, 2026. The GT 55 and GT 63 versions are expected to become available in spring 2027.
Although prices for Portugal have not yet been announced, the GT 53 will have a starting price of €113,050 in the German market.
With this launch, Mercedes-AMG demonstrates that electric cars can offer much more than efficiency and silent driving.
The GT SUV combines power, range, technology and versatility in a model that aims to bring the AMG driving experience to a new generation of electric cars.
