Fiat Koala: new electric car could be inspired by the Citroën 2CV

Fiat is preparing a new small electric car that could reach the market under the name Koala. The future city car is expected to focus on simplicity, practicality and an affordable price, sharing its platform with the new Citroën 2CV, another of the Stellantis Group’s most anticipated projects.

The news was confirmed during the Paris Motor Show, where Arnauld Belloni, head of Fiat, revealed that the Italian brand is developing several models based on the new E-Car platform, including a small electric car inspired by the Citroën 2CV project.

Although there are still no official images or technical specifications, development is already at an advanced stage. And there is one curious detail: Fiat could continue its tradition of giving animal names to its cars.

Fiat Koala could be the brand’s next affordable electric car

The name Koala is, for now, one of the possibilities being considered. Arnauld Belloni confirmed that Fiat already holds the rights to use this name, although it has not yet officially announced the name of the future model.

The choice would make sense in a range that already includes the Panda and Grande Panda, and where the brand is also preparing other models, including the Grizzly.

More than the name, the main objective is to develop a compact, economical electric car suited to everyday journeys.

To achieve this, Fiat is expected to use the Stellantis Group’s E-Car platform, which will also underpin the future electric Citroën 2CV. Sharing this architecture will make it possible to take advantage of common technical solutions, although each brand will seek to develop its own identity.

The new model could therefore strengthen Fiat’s presence in the urban electric car segment, at a time when purchase price remains one of the main barriers to the adoption of electric mobility.

New Fiat electric car will draw inspiration from the Panda and Citroën 2CV

Although it will share its technical base with the future Citroën 2CV, the new Fiat is not expected to be simply a version of the French model with a different badge.

François Leboine, head of Fiat design, explained that the project will take its own approach, inspired by some visual elements of the Panda, currently sold in its most compact version as the Pandina.

However, the brand does not intend to create a modern reproduction of an old car. The idea will be to recover certain design principles, such as functionality and simplicity, adapting them to a contemporary design language.

Among the possible references is also the Fiat Ippo, a prototype developed by students from the European Institute of Design as part of a competition promoted by the Italian brand.

The project attracted Fiat’s interest, with the company even bringing seven students into its design department through internships.

Despite this, there is still no confirmation that the future Koala will adopt specific elements from this prototype.

What is known is that Fiat intends to present something different within the small electric car segment, seeking to combine personality, versatility and affordability.

Why has the Fiat Koala not yet been presented?

The absence of the future city car from the Paris Motor Show raised some questions, particularly because the new Citroën 2CV was one of the stars of the event.

According to François Leboine, the Fiat project is at a similar stage of development to the French model, but the brand felt that it was not yet the right time to reveal it.

One of the possibilities suggested by the specialist press is that Fiat chose not to take attention away from the presentation of the Citroën 2CV, which was particularly important for the French public.

For now, the brand is keeping the final design, dimensions and technical specifications under wraps.

No figures have been released for power, battery capacity, range or price either.

Some reports point to a possible market launch in 2027, but Fiat has not yet officially confirmed that date.

Fiat prepares a new generation of affordable electric cars

The possible Fiat Koala is part of a broader strategy by the Italian brand to strengthen its range of affordable cars.

The objective is to renew the entry-level range and respond to the needs of drivers looking for compact, economical and easy-to-use vehicles, particularly in urban environments.

At the same time, Fiat intends to retain alternatives with combustion engines, recognising that not all customers are ready to switch to a fully electric car.

This approach will allow the brand to continue offering different mobility solutions, following market developments and consumer needs.

The E-Car platform could play an important role in this strategy, making it easier to develop several small models within the Stellantis Group.

If the project moves forward as planned, the new Fiat Koala could become an interesting alternative for anyone looking for an affordable electric car, with compact dimensions and an identity different from the models currently available.

Until the official presentation, several questions remain unanswered, including the final name, technical specifications, price and launch date.

One thing is certain: Fiat is preparing a new chapter for its city cars, and the possible Koala could be one of the main new models in this transformation.
