Snow, ice and strong winds: how to prepare your car for Storm Ingrid
The arrival of Storm Ingrid in mainland Portugal is bringing an unusual scenario for the country: snow at relatively low altitudes, negative temperatures at higher elevations, strong winds and significant maritime agitation. Beyond the impact on daily life, these weather conditions require extra caution from anyone who depends on a car for mobility, whether for personal or professional reasons.
According to recent weather forecasts, the combination of intense cold and precipitation may lead to snow accumulation above 600 to 800 metres, with ice formation in several regions of the North and Centre of the country. In some districts, orange and red weather warnings have been issued, reflecting the potential for serious disruption to road traffic and to economic activities that rely on mobility.
Snow
When phenomena such as snow and ice occur, vehicle grip on the road surface is drastically reduced. Braking becomes less effective, safe distances must be increased, and any sudden manoeuvre can result in a skid. In these conditions, preparing the vehicle is no longer just a recommendation but a critical safety factor.
Tyres play a central role here. Worn or poorly maintained tyres lose effectiveness very quickly on cold or slippery surfaces. In higher-altitude areas, the use of snow chains may be mandatory whenever indicated by road signage, and they are also an effective solution to improve traction on roads covered with snow or ice.
Essential equipment in the car
During periods of extreme cold, small precautions can make a big difference. Before setting off, it is advisable to check the condition of the battery, as low temperatures affect its performance. Windscreen washer fluid should contain antifreeze, and wiper blades should be in good condition.
Keeping an ice scraper, a snow brush and, if possible, a de-icing spray in the car can help avoid delays and uncomfortable situations. For those who regularly drive in mountainous areas, carrying snow chains suitable for the tyre dimensions is a sensible precaution.
Special attention to electric and automatic vehicles
Severe winter conditions also affect electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Low temperatures can reduce battery range, especially on short journeys or with intensive use of heating systems. Route planning and charging therefore become even more important on days like these.
In automatic vehicles, many models are equipped with a snow mode, designed specifically to reduce wheel slip and make driving easier on slippery surfaces. Using this mode can make a real difference on climbs, descents or starts on icy roads.
