Road safety: Alcobaça among the municipalities targeted by the “Zero Tax at the Wheel” campaign

The Autoridade Nacional de Segurança Rodoviária (ANSR), together with the PSP and GNR, has launched a new phase of the “Zero Alcohol at the Wheel” campaign, which runs until November 10 and includes enforcement actions in Alcobaça, Pombal, Chaves, Andrães, and Tunes.

The “Zero Alcohol at the Wheel” campaign is a joint initiative by the ANSR, the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR), and the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP), integrated into the 2025 National Inspection Plan.

The main goal is to reduce accidents linked to alcohol consumption and to promote responsible driving, reinforcing the message that the only safe blood alcohol level is zero.

During the campaign period, which runs from November 4 to 10, 2025, authorities are conducting intensive roadside checks across the country, including in the municipality of Alcobaça, with particular focus on areas with higher nighttime traffic and near entertainment venues.

In addition to alcohol testing operations, the campaign also includes awareness initiatives on social media and through the media, featuring testimonies and educational messages about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.

In Portugal, one in every four drivers killed in accidents had a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 0.5 g/l. With just 0.5 g/l of alcohol in the blood, the risk of a serious or fatal accident doubles. Alcohol reduces the field of vision, delays decision-making, and impairs motor coordination.
