Porsche registers patent for a W18 engine with three turbos and 18 cylinders
Porsche has once again surprised the automotive world by filing a patent for a tri-turbo W18 engine — an unprecedented and bold configuration that promises to take combustion engineering to another level.
The document, registered with the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) and identified by Carbuzz, describes an engine with three banks of cylinders arranged at 60 degrees, totaling 18 cylinders, each with its own turbocharger. The concept aims to maximize performance and efficiency by optimizing airflow and reducing friction losses.

A truly unique engine
Unlike the already familiar “W” engines, such as Bentley’s W12 or Bugatti’s W16, this new W18 from Porsche features a distinct architecture. It consists of three six-cylinder blocks aligned and connected to a common crankshaft — a concept that, in practical terms, resembles three inline engines working together.
According to the patent, the result is increased available power without changing displacement, alongside efficiency gains and a more balanced thermal performance. The separation between the intake and exhaust systems also helps keep the intake air cooler, ensuring more consistent performance at high revs.
Despite the global transition toward electric mobility, Porsche shows that innovation in combustion engines is far from over. This project proves that the Stuttgart brand’s engineering spirit continues to push the boundaries of mechanical performance, even in times of change.
However, as with other patents filed by Porsche, there is no guarantee that the tri-turbo W18 will ever reach production. The brand may simply be protecting intellectual property and testing new technical solutions for future applications.
Even so, the idea of a tri-turbo W18 engine screaming up to 9,000 revolutions per minute is enough to make any car enthusiast dream.
