Motorhome or Campervan: Everything you need to know

Hitting the road in a motorhome or a converted van (campervan) is an increasingly popular dream among both Portuguese travelers and visitors exploring our country. But before setting off on your road trip, it’s important to understand the specific driving license requirements for your chosen vehicle, among other considerations. This article explains everything in a clear and simple way.

What license do you need to drive a motorhome?

Most light motorhomes, weighing up to 3,500 kg and with up to 9 seats (including the driver), can be driven with a standard Category B driving license.

However, if the motorhome weighs up to 4,250 kg (non-commercial use), you may still use a Category B license, provided that:

  • You are at least 21 years old;

  • You have held a Category B license for at least 3 years.

Motorhomes weighing over 4,250 kg require a C1 license (up to 7,500 kg) or a C license (above that), even if used solely for leisure. These cases require additional training, medical exams, and theoretical and practical tests.

What about a converted van (campervan)?

Converted vans such as a Fiat Ducato, VW California, or Mercedes Sprinter also follow the legal 3,500 kg limit to be driven with a Category B license. As long as it’s for recreational use and the number of seats doesn’t exceed 9, there are no legal restrictions.

However, the weight listed on the Single Vehicle Document (DUA) is the reference value. Even if your license allows up to 4,250 kg, exceeding the weight stated in the DUA may result in a fine.

Pros and Cons: Motorhome vs Campervan

Each option has its strengths and limitations. Here’s a quick comparison:

Traditional Motorhome

✅ Greater comfort, with WC, kitchen, and living areas;
✅ More autonomy for long trips and overnight stays in authorized locations;
❌ Higher rental and maintenance costs;
❌ Harder to maneuver in city centers and more parking restrictions.

Converted Van (Campervan)

✅ More compact and easier to drive;
✅ Ideal for cities and narrow roads;
✅ More affordable rental (e.g., Indie Campers models);
❌ Less space and amenities — WC and shower not always included;
❌ Less comfort in extreme weather conditions.

Tips before renting or converting

  • Always check the actual weight of the vehicle on the DUA;

  • Make sure your license is valid for the vehicle and any trailer;

  • For longer trips, opt for vehicles with a WC and fresh water tank;

  • Respect designated overnight areas to avoid fines for improper parking;

  • If renting, confirm that the insurance covers the driver profile and license type.
