Mitsubishi confirms new Pajero retaining off-road DNA
Mitsubishi has officially confirmed the return of the iconic Pajero, five years after production ended on one of the most legendary models in the Japanese brand’s history.
The confirmation was made during Mitsubishi’s financial results presentation, where the company unveiled its future plans and included the return of the Pajero among its upcoming launches.
The announcement marks the comeback of a name that won millions of fans around the world and became a benchmark in the off-road vehicle segment.
A legendary name returns
Originally launched in 1982, the Pajero became one of the most recognizable SUVs on the market.
Over several generations, it stood out for its off-road capabilities, mechanical robustness and success in competitions such as the Dakar Rally.
Production of the model ended in 2021, leaving many fans wondering whether the Pajero would ever return.
Now, Mitsubishi appears to have given a definitive answer.
What do we know about the new Pajero?
For now, the brand has not revealed any official images or technical specifications.
However, several international sources point to a large SUV developed on a modern platform with a strong focus on electrification.
According to automotive media reports, the future Pajero could feature a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, a technology Mitsubishi already uses in models such as the Outlander.
Despite its technological evolution, expectations are that the new model will retain strong off-road capabilities, preserving one of the characteristics that made the Pajero so popular over the decades.
Debut could happen as early as 2026
Although Mitsubishi has not yet confirmed an exact unveiling date, several sources point to an official reveal during 2026.
The commercial launch is expected to follow later, depending on the markets selected by the manufacturer.
For many enthusiasts, this is one of the most anticipated automotive comebacks of recent years, at a time when several manufacturers are reviving historic nameplates.
An important return for Mitsubishi
For decades, the Pajero was one of Mitsubishi’s flagship models and helped build the brand’s reputation in the adventure and off-road vehicle segment.
With the return of this historic name, the Japanese manufacturer aims to strengthen its position in the global SUV market by combining its heritage with modern electrification technologies.
Many details are still yet to be revealed, but one thing is already certain: the Pajero name is officially back.
