Audi may be about to say goodbye to the A8

The future of the Audi A8 appears increasingly uncertain. The historic luxury sedan from the German brand may be about to leave production — and, at least for now, without a confirmed successor.

There is still no official announcement from Audi, but several signs point in that direction. One of the clearest emerged recently when the model was removed from the brand’s official German configurator, something that normally indicates the end of orders and the gradual closure of production.

In Portugal, the scenario is similar: the A8 can also no longer be configured on the brand’s website. In statements to the specialized website Motor1, Audi spokesperson Marcel Bestle explained that the global availability of the model depends on existing stock and logistical factors, without directly confirming the end of production.

A successor that was put on hold

Initially, the brand’s plan was to replace the A8 with two new fully electric models. These projects, internally known as Landyacht and Landjet, were expected to take on the role of Audi’s new flagship sedans.

The idea was to share technology with a future Porsche project known as K1. However, that project eventually changed direction significantly, shifting from a three-row electric SUV to a combustion-engine model.

This change appears to have triggered a domino effect in Audi’s planning, leading to the indefinite postponement of a possible A8 successor. Even so, the brand has not completely closed the door to a new model in the future, stating that it will communicate further details at a later stage.

The last generation?

If the current scenario is confirmed, the fifth generation of the A8 — introduced in 2017 and updated in 2021 — could indeed become the last.

Even after the facelift, the model failed to reverse the downward trend in sales. In 2025, only 2,031 units were sold in Europe, representing a drop of around 21.9% compared to the previous year.

Another factor weighing on this decision is the arrival of the Euro 7 standard, which comes into force at the end of November. The stricter emissions requirements make it less viable to invest in another update to keep the model in production.

A model that shaped Audi’s history

More than just a luxury sedan, the A8 has always represented a true technological showcase for the brand from Ingolstadt.

Originally launched in the 1990s, it stood out as one of the first mass-production cars with an aluminum structure, an innovative solution that helped reduce weight and improve efficiency.

Over the years, the model positioned itself as a direct rival to segment benchmarks such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7 Series, helping to establish Audi’s ambition in the top executive sedan segment.

If the farewell is confirmed, it will mark the end of an important chapter in the brand’s history — and of one of the models that most contributed to consolidating Audi’s technological reputation in the automotive market.
