Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 returns electric again with up to 680 hp
Mercedes-AMG has officially unveiled the new CLA 45 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 4MATIC+ Shooting Brake, marking the beginning of a new era for the German brand's performance division. For the first time, the compact AMG model abandons its traditional combustion engine in favour of a fully electric powertrain, developed to deliver the performance and character the brand is known for.
The models made their dynamic debut at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where visitors had the opportunity to see Mercedes-AMG's latest high-performance EVs in action for the first time.
680 hp, three electric motors and supercar performance
Beneath the bodywork, both the saloon and the Shooting Brake share the same powertrain.
The system features three axial-flux electric motors, one on the front axle and two on the rear, producing a combined 500 kW (680 hp) while delivering fully variable all-wheel drive.
Thanks to this setup, the new CLA 45 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 270 km/h when equipped with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package.
Its 800-volt electrical architecture enables ultra-fast charging while ensuring consistent performance under demanding driving conditions through AMG's advanced cooling system.
Saloon or Shooting Brake?
Mercedes-AMG offers the new CLA in two distinct body styles.
The saloon focuses on a sleek, sporty and aerodynamic design, while the new CLA Shooting Brake adds greater practicality with increased luggage capacity and improved rear passenger space, without compromising performance.
Despite their different designs and functionality, both models share the same powertrain, technology and driving dynamics.
According to Mercedes-AMG, the goal was to offer two different interpretations of the same high-performance electric vehicle, tailored to different lifestyles.
Technology built for a new generation of AMG models
Beyond the new electric powertrain, the CLA 45 introduces several technologies never before seen in a compact AMG model.
Inside, drivers will find the new MBUX Superscreen, featuring AMG-specific displays and performance functions, along with AMG sports seats, a dedicated multifunction steering wheel and multiple configurable driving modes.
Mercedes-AMG has also developed a dedicated sound system designed to recreate a more emotional driving experience, complementing the instant response of the electric motors.
The saloon offers a WLTP driving range of up to 670 km, while the Shooting Brake can travel more than 640 km, proving that outstanding performance can coexist with everyday usability.
A new chapter for Mercedes-AMG
With the arrival of the new CLA 45 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 4MATIC+ Shooting Brake, Mercedes-AMG enters a completely new chapter in its history.
After decades of building high-performance four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines, the performance division is now embracing an all-electric platform while aiming to preserve the driving excitement that has defined AMG for generations.
The new models represent one of Mercedes-AMG's most important launches in recent years and offer a glimpse into the future of the brand's high-performance compact cars.
